Quentin H. – Speaking Through Photos

Living in Nantes, Quentin draws us into his world through his enticing captures of his hometown. Check him out below.

Say hello to Quentin:

Where are you from?  Where have you been?

I’m from Nantes, France – it is 400km southwest from Paris. I’ve been to Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and all over in France.

What’s your favorite place in the world?

My favorite place in the world is the United States, especially New York or Washington State. I like the US because there are so many beautiful places to shoot, from city to nature. I find Japan to be intriguing as well, because its culture is so different from Europe and the US – it’s special and wonderful. It’s one of my goals to visit these countries.

How would you describe your visual style?

My work usually displays a mundane subject, but I express my creative vision and feelings through it. I don’t just post work to post, I work to refine it and inject a part of me in it.

How do you find your inspiration?

I find my inspiration outside when walking or riding my bicycle into the city or the forest. I also find it on social media, and that’s where I can share my photos to the world as well.

How did you get started in photography?

I started photography with my first phone (it was a French brand). When I had free time during school, I went to the park near my school and I started to shoot everything – it was cool!

What types of photography do you do?

I mostly do nature photography because I love what the earth gives to us, and I want to share this gift with everyone. It’s also because I don’t live near big cities. This is one of my favorite nature photos as it tells a story – the path unfolds as if traversing it may lead to paradise. I wanted to share the beauty of the fall season through the vibrant orange colors of the leaves.

Of the photos you’ve taken, which are your three favorites?

The first is a portrait of a cat who’s sitting in front of me. We can see the light shedding in from the left and the shadow casted on the bottom of the photo.

The second is a photo I took when I was in the forest with a bit of fog in the front. I wanted to create a dark and hauntingly beautiful mood.

The third is a photo I took when I was on summer holiday. The beautiful sunset is the focal point, but I also love the beach in the background and the reflection of the light hitting the buildings and bench on the right.

What’s the best advice you can think of for someone just starting in photography?

I’m not a professional or someone who takes the best photos, but all I can say is to keep shooting everyday and everything you see. Go for a walk whether it’s the city or the forest to take photos. This is how you can progress.

Who do you want to give a shoutout to?

I really want to give a shoutout to my sources of inspiration: @trashhand@RyanMillier@Kostenn@andrewtkearns, and @jakechams.

How do you express yourself through your photography?

I really want to express what I’m feeling at the moment when I take the photo through my composition and editing.

What kind of gear do you have?

All I have is a Sony a6000 with a 16-50mm and a 55-210mm lens. I like both depending on what I shoot.

What has photography done for you as a person?

Before photography, I didn’t have a hobby that I enjoyed. Now, I love photography and hearing the “click” of the camera.
