Lénaïc Sanz

Hello! My name is Lénaïc and I am a French professional photographer based in Paris. I have had an unusual career that has allowed me to travel around the world and develop a different artistic look. Passionate about art, I started in beauty and fashion photography. I’m very curious and am forever learning. I always try to find a new artistic concept or technique.

Where are you from?  Where have you been?

I’m from Paris, France. I love to travel! I’ve been to many different countries. I have lived in Chili and Ukraine.

What’s your favorite place in the world?

Russia and Mongolia, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. I love the culture and their way of thinking.

What’s on your “bucket list” of ideas to create?

To shoot underwater and to shoot a fashion editorial in an amazing landscape like Iceland.

How would you describe your visual style?

Very hard to say, but desaturated with a color pastel palette. I like romanticism and darkness.

How do you find your inspiration?

From music. Music helps me a lot when I shoot and when I work on post-processing.

Tell us about your career.  How did you get into it?

I was history teacher. I was living in Chile in 2011. Then I came back to France in the summer 2011, and I began photography in October 2011.

What types of photography do you do?

Art, beauty, and sometimes fashion. I love the creativity in mixing art and fashion.

What was the moment you decided to become a photographer?

I don’t know. A long time ago, I thought I would like to be a reporter, but I never touched a camera. Then one morning, I woke up and said myself, “I want to do photography.”

Photography is competitive.  How do you stand out?

Yes, it’s competitive, but the real challenge is against oneself.

What’s the best advice you can think of for someone just starting in photography?

Believe in yourself. Take your time and go all the way.

What is the best thing a model can do to make the most of a photoshoot?

To be herself.

What was your most memorable photoshoot?

One of my memorable photoshoots was in Ukraine. I shot in the house of a makeup artist somewhere in the village. They offered me “Borsch,” a Ukrainian soup and we shared it – it was a very nice moment.

Who was the most unforgettable model you’ve ever met?

It was a Russian model. I shot her a lot and we understood each other, as if we had a link or connection. That’s the best feeling.

What’s your philosophy when it comes to being a great photographer?

Just be yourself. Go all the way.

How do you express yourself through your photography?

I think it’s hard to express myself through my photography, as I’m not very conscious about it. Of course, it’s a part of my personality, but I still feel frustrated as I don’t really express myself. I don’t know what I want.

What photography advice do you wish you had when you were first starting out?

Always trust yourself.

What are 3 tips you have for aspiring photographers?

  1. Use simple things.
  2. Find inspirations through different mediums (history, music, books, etc.).
  3. Don’t limit the imagination.

What kind of gear do you have?  What’s your favorite and why?

I have a 5D Mark II with two lenses: 24-105mm/85mm

What’s one lighting tip you’d like to share with other photographers?

I love one source light/monolight and use soft light (big softbox or octobox).

What is your most life-changing event?

A woman who changed me.

What’s one of your biggest fears?

Not being strong enough.

What will you be doing five years from now?

Improve myself. 🙂

What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t?

I’ve always wanted to go to Antarctica.
